Selecting a voltage stabilizer for a house depends on numerous critical factors. When the input voltage fluctuates, electrical current increases which may burn the motor windings of an appliance. Since the voltage in the power supply is erratic in India, the possibility of voltage fluctuations is high, which increases the occurrence of damaging household appliances and machinery.

A servo voltage stabilizer is used in such scenarios to prevent voltage fluctuation by balancing the input supply voltage. Servo stabilizers have a servo motor mechanism that automatically corrects the voltage into an acceptable range.

  • Collect the wattage of all the appliances in a house. Add them together to derive the total power consumption that the stabilizer is required to process in watts.
  • Since the standard service voltage in India is 230V AC, 50 Hertz, you will need to convert the available wattage into voltage ampere (VA). Later, a 20% increase is added to the total wattage as a safe value. This ensures that the servo stabilizer will function even if the voltage fluctuation is higher than the anticipated power consumption.
  • For example, if the total wattage derived is approximately 1000W, then adding 20% to it will increase it to 1200W. This is considered as the power factor for selecting a stabilizer. Usually, the voltage fluctuations in a particular location are considered as a base reference. A 20% is added to it as the safety value, instead of adding the wattage of each appliance in a household for a higher power rating.
Based on the above technical factors, you can select the correct power rating for a domestic stabilizer. However, other features require attention while selecting a servo voltage stabilizer for home purposes. They are -

Overload protection
A domestic stabilizer must be equipped with a shut-off or fail-safe in case of a short circuit or burnout due to overloading of voltage. This is the next most important feature that a domestic voltage stabilizer must-have.

Power indicators

Voltage stabilizers must have a digital power indicator to accurately measure and understand the voltage that stabilizer experience daily.
